Call of the Wild

I've not blogged for a few days - partly because of continuing thunderstorms and being too busy with apartment overhaul. After a quiet weekend and bedtime close at hand, I was in my bedroom doing some things and Kay (my house-mate and best friend)called to me from the living room. When I came in and saw her standing next to the sliding glass door to the patio looking down, I naturally came over and looked down too. There was a critter running along the doorframe.

It was a hamster.

We could not believe our eyes. But that's what it was - a hamster. The golden-white color variety. It took us about 10 minutes to actually catch the thing and then create a makeshift residence for it. I gave it some water and cat food as I don't normally keep hamster food handy.

It's very cute but what the hell am I going to do with it? You can't take it to the pound. I can't give it to the pet store up the street as I do not know how long it has been outside and what it might have disease wise. I plan on putting up some signs in nearby buildings to see if someone's hamster got loose. I tend to think that someone just got tired of it or moved and let it loose in the backyard.

We get skunks, possums, foxes, chipmunks, moles and other critters visiting our patio in the evening hours but a hamster is a first.

I am in the middle of a major overhaul at the place I'm living at right now...exhausting to say the least. Haven't had a hamster wander into the yard yet, but have you ever had a huge chipmunk burrow beneath a chain-link fence to get to an herb/veggie garden and eat most of the harvest (well, save for the green onions it trampled on)? Pesky critters... ;)

Gotta watch out for those wild and wiley hamsters. So how is little Hamilton? I can't say we've ever had a hamster wander by, though practically everything else on the planet has. There was the week a guinea fowl decided to camp on our backporch, and the day the zebra ran by, and yesterday we had to dispose of a baby opposum cadaver the dog had figured was a grave threat to our safety and so bravely dispatched.
Yet so far, hamster-free! ;-)--s

Ahhh! Chipmunks! I hear you Heather! Well, I recently had the same problem in my garden, half the carrot roots were eaten and I couldn't get rid of the damn thing. That was until a friend of mine advised me to use rat traps, and not mouse traps. So I bought that huge thing, put a peanut, and schlammo! Problem solved?? NO!!!! I saw another one roaming about two days ago, so I've put the peanut back, but nothing as of yet. I'll keep you posted. I hate having to get to this, but I had no choice. It's the chipper or my carrots!

Just checked, the peanut was gone! Once again, I have been outsmarted by a 2 inch long animal! So I've put a smaller peanut so the animal will have to walk on the trap some more. Maybe I should start a chipmunk blog.
